Basically as the technology gets smaller you can either.

1) keep the clock speed the same & put a huge amount more transistors on then the older processors.

or

2) you can keep it the same & clock it to 5GHz which will be so hot it will reduce performance wasting the cup's potential.

My current work mainly revolves around Second Life, but I recognize the problem. Interactive applications in SL suffer from the same kind of interruptions and hacks as webbased games, maybe even moreso, as just about anyone can create object-spam on any given location.
